Discretionary Housing Payments
A Discretionary Housing Payment is a short term payment awarded to people who need help paying their rent and in order to qualify they must receive Housing Benefit.
The amount of money that the Council can spend each year is limited. Consequently, each application is assessed for priority, which due to demand means that only high priority cases will qualify for Discretionary Housing Payments.
However, extra funding received from the Department for Work and Pensions and the Scottish Government will enable the Shetland Islands Council to award a Discretionary Housing Payment, during the 2013-14 financial year, to every claimant with an under occupancy Housing Benefit short fall.
As Discretionary Housing Payment is an application based scheme, we cannot award a Discretionary Housing Payment without a completed application form.
An award of DHP is paid in the same way as your Housing Benefit.
If you wish to apply please complete the Discretionary Housing Payment Application.
