Shetland Islands Council's Convener is Councillor Malcolm Bell
Councillor Malcolm Bell was elected in May 2012 as an independent member representing the Lerwick North and Bressay ward. He was appointed Convener of Shetland Islands Council by fellow members.
As Convener he is an ambassador of the Council who represents Shetland at civic and ceremonial events at home and outwith the islands, welcomes guests to the islands and visits local groups in the community.
The 'conscience of the Council', Malcolm also chairs Council meetings, upholds good governance and the Constitution, and ensures that all Members have the right to participate in council decision making.
Malcolm spent almost 30 years in the police force and retired as
Shetland’s Area Commander in 2009.
He has taken an active role in public life and was appointed Honorary Sheriff at Lerwick Sheriff Court in 2010. He was also appointed Independent Convener of both Shetland and Orkney Adult Protection Committees. In early 2010 he became a non-executive director of NHS Shetland.
As part of his role, Malcolm is keen to recognise particularly significant events in the community, such as diamond wedding anniversaries, 100th birthdays or outstanding achievements. If you would like to request a civic recognition letter from the Convener for anyone, please email firstname.lastname@example.org, giving as much detail as possible about the nature of the event / achievement and the person/people involved.
