Deferring Entry into P1
In some cases parents might want to defer their child's entry to school. If a child's third birthday falls in January or February, then they are entitled to defer entry to a Primary 1 class until the following year. Children who have their 4th birthday before January are not entitled to defer entry, but can be considered if it is in their best interests, and deferral is at the discretion of the local authority. Parents should always consult with the Early Years Learning and Childcare setting staff and the receiving primary school if they would like their child to be considered for deferred entry to Primary 1.
Early admission to Primary 1 or Repeating / Moving Forward an Academic Year
In some cases parents may wish their child to start Primary 1 early, or wish their child to repeat an academic year or move forward an academic year. Applications may be considered if appropriate to the needs of the child. Parents wishing to consider these options should consult relevant school staff in the first instance.
