transfers and mutual exchanges
Any Council tenant can apply to join a Mutual Exchange scheme. Most mutual exchanges take place within Shetland although there are some opportunities for Council tenants to exchange to other public sector housing across the UK.
The Mutual Exchange scheme is designed to help tenants who want to move within Shetland and who are tenants of the Shetland Islands Council or Hjaltland Housing Association - further information is available here. If two tenants agree that they would like to swap houses, each must request this in writing and not move until their Landlords’’ have given their written consent. Your Housing Officer can give you further information and advice.
SIC and Hjaltland Housing Association are partners with HomeSwapper, the national home swap service. The service is free to all SIC and Hjaltland tenants looking to exchange house across the UK.
The service is web-based and easy to use. You can register with the HomeSwapper website and choose up to nine areas you would like to move to. You are then matched to homes meeting your criteria. These matches are placed in 'My Matches', on the website that can only be seen by you once you have logged in. You can also be prompted about new matches by email or text message.
HomeSwapper can also produce a printed list of anyone wanting to move within or into Shetland (from all over the UK). The details may be distributed and displayed in housing offices across the UK.
If you find a suitable property to exchange to, all parties must obtain the formal approval of their landlord.
Please remember you can use the public access computers available at the Council Housing Office, Hjaltland Housing Association or the Shetland Tenants Forum.
