Train Shetland held its annual Apprenticeship Awards event on Wednesday 14 November to celebrate the success of the 35 trainees who completed their apprenticeship in 2018.
The apprentices have completed vocational qualifications including SVQs and Diplomas, alongside holding employment with local businesses and gaining invaluable experience. Over 60 local employers currently support around 130 apprentices in training at any one time.
Train Shetland manages apprenticeship programmes across several sectors including Business Administration and Accountancy, Hairdressing, Digital Media, Children and Young People, Care, Construction, Automotive, Warehousing, Agriculture and Horticulture, Hospitality and Engineering. Train Shetland also investigate other apprenticeships opportunities subject to employer demand.
The Awards brought together apprentices, employers and representatives from Shetland College and NAFC Marine Centre, to recognise their collective achievements.
Councillor Peter Campbell, Chair of Shetland College Board, says: “Shetland Islands Council is very much committed to providing young people in particular with the opportunity to receive high quality training which will enable them to remain in the islands and contribute to the economic performance of their own community.
“The Council views the apprenticeship programme as an important part of its strategy. Apprenticeships enable well-trained and skilled workers to be part of the Council’s workforce and assist the Council in delivering an excellent service to the Shetland Community.”
A Modern Apprenticeship enables individuals to achieve an industry-recognised qualification within the workplace without having to attend college or University full-time. Qualifications range from SCQF Levels 5-11 and candidates can progress through the levels whilst in work.
