Operational note - Bressay Ferry Linkspan Works – May 2024

Bressay ferry Leirna

Shetland Islands Council’s Ferry Services will be carrying out planned essential maintenance on the Bressay Linkspan, which will affect the service Friday 24th - Monday 27th May

Shetland Islands Council’s Ferry Services will be carrying out planned essential maintenance on the Bressay Linkspan, which will affect the service from 1900 hours on Friday 24th to 0600 hours on Monday 27th May.  The maintenance involves major structural work which will require the Bressay linkspan to be taken out of use.

From 1900 hours on Friday 24th to 0600 hours on Monday 27th May, we will be operating to an alternative timetable - https://www.shetland.gov.uk/ferries/timetable/2 - as a foot passenger only service.  Access will be provided via a gangway from the vessel to the quayside at Heogan Pier in Bressay and via the RORO ramp at the Lerwick Ferry Terminal.  Passengers should be aware that the gangway and the stairs on board the vessel can be steep.

The service will be operating a Bookings Only service for this period.  For bookings, please contact the Booking Office on 01595 7445804 - opening hours are Monday to Saturday 0800-1700 and Sunday 0800-1300 (On Sunday 26th May Booking Office hours will be 0800-1700).

The planned dates for these works are from 1900 hours on Friday 24th May to 0600 hours on Monday 27th May 2024, weather permitting.

The 1845 sailing on Friday 24th May will be the last service to take vehicles from the Maryfield Terminal at Bressay to the Lerwick Terminal.  The 1900 sailing will be the last service to take vehicles from the Lerwick Terminal to the Maryfield Terminal at Bressay.  After that 1900 sailing, the service between the Lerwick Terminal and the Heogan Pier will be foot passenger and bookings only, operating to a restricted timetable - https://www.shetland.gov.uk/ferries/timetable/2

There will be no parking available at either the Maryfield Terminal, Lerwick Terminal or Heogan Pier.  A free bus service will operate between Heogan Pier and the Bressay Public Hall for the duration of the works.  Parking and welfare facilities will be provided at the Bressay Public Hall.

The regular RORO service will resume to the normal timetable from the Maryfield Terminal, Bressay at 0700 on Monday 27th May, weather permitting.

This is the latest in a series of scheduled works affecting linkspans across the ferry network, with work already completed at Skerries, Vidlin, Laxo, Symbister, Gutcher and Belmont.

A further reminder will follow, closer to the time of the work affecting the Bressay route.  The SIC’s Ferry Service apologises for any inconvenience that this may cause.
