carrier bag charges
Scotland has been using 750 million bags each year. The requirement to charge aims to encourage shoppers to think about reusing bags, in order to prevent litter and combat our throwaway culture, and to make using a bag for life a habit wherever practicable.
The charge applies to almost all single use carrier bags, whether made from plastic or paper, in any shop (not just grocery stores) - although there are some exemptions.
