Sustaining Jobs and Creating New Ones (2023)

Our significant investments in new infrastructure at Scalloway Fish Market, Toft Pier and addressing the constraints affecting Cullivoe Harbour will provide essential onshore facilities for fishing and aquaculture

...meeting user needs and promoting further economic activity around our coastline.

The new Scalloway Fishmarket was officially completed in 2020 and opened in July 2021 by HRH The Prince of Wales.  An average of 17 whitefish vessels a week land at the Scalloway Fishmarket.  Over 156,000 boxes of whitefish were landed at Scalloway in 2022-23, up from 148,000 the previous year and, so far, 2023/24 is projected to be higher with 130,000 boxes landed in the first three quarters of 2023-24, so the facility continues to be a valuable asset to Shetland’s industry.

The new Toft Pier facility was opened in 2021 with investment totalling £3.5m.  Since opening, the new pier has been heavily used by the inshore fishing sector, aquaculture and leisure users.

The Council also supported North Yell Development Council (NYDC) in the development of the new Industrial Estate and Marina at Cullivoe, providing support and guidance to NYDC while levering in almost £2m from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, as well as providing direct funding from Council resources.  The new facility was officially opened in July 2023 by Joe Fitzpatrick, Scottish Government’s Local Government Empowerment and Planning Minister.
