Work with our partners to achieve a more sustainable, ecologically diverse and resilient natural environment as it is Shetland’s most valued and distinctive asset. We will connect people with the natural world, for their health and wellbeing as we work to improve, manage and promote accessible open space to deliver health, social and economic benefits to our community.
The council’s Outdoor Access Team has been working with Ability Shetland to pull together information packs on routes that could be suitable for people using all terrain wheelchairs.
Ability Shetland have four all terrain wheelchairs and this kind of equipment removes barriers and makes sure everyone can be included in activities in their own communities and places of interest to them.
Using local knowledge, staff in both organisations have now identified five (potentially six) routes with different levels of difficulty of terrain across the Shetland mainland.
The council will produce the route packs for Ability Shetland, which can then be used by the service themselves or by people borrowing one of the wheelchairs.
