Support the creation of community energy networks across Shetland that link in with a green and strengthened Shetland Electricity Grid and complement/enable local energy efficiency, recycling and carbon capture initiatives.
Shetland has been a key energy hub for nearly 50 years through activities in oil and gas and, as the focus of energy transitions towards renewables and clean fuels, the islands have the opportunity to continue to make a significant contribution in transforming the national energy system.
This past year has seen substantial emphasis on energy security and affordability, alongside a concern for the emissions from fossil fuel generated energy. Though Shetland is far from mainland UK, it is well located to be at the centre of the future energy system.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we have faced and significant changes are required to protect our planet. Everyone has a role to play during the transition to net zero, and businesses in Shetland are already leading the way.
The council’s Climate Change Team organised a range of activities to support Scotland’s Climate Week (26 September to 2 October 2022) and highlighted the impacts that climate change will have on Shetland, as well as what can be done locally to help tackle it.
Events included two ‘Shetland Energy Showcases’, where the council and a number of other organisations involved in energy transition, energy advice for households and businesses, as well as skills and training, came together to share information. These showcases provided an opportunity for the public to find out more about the changes and support available during the transition to net zero.
Another event saw the initiation of the Shetland Community Climate Action Network, which aims to share knowledge and experiences of climate-related projects.
