Education authorities are now bound by statutory duty to promote race equality. To meet the duty they need to tackle unlawful discrimination and promote equal opportunities and good relations when carrying out all their relevant functions. This means that education authorities have a key role to play in supporting and encouraging schools to develop good practice in achieving race equality, particularly if the work involves meeting the requirements of the duty.
