Tingwall Primary School has received a satisfactory evaluation from Education Scotland following a recent inspection, with some strengths identified as well as areas for improvement.
A team of inspectors visited the school in March this year, and spoke to parents and carers, children and staff.
The inspection team found the following strengths in the school’s work:
- A welcoming environment with positive relationships and happy children who enjoy coming to school.
- A strong sense of teamwork, with a clear focus on improving children’s experiences.
- Children’s experiences in art, music and physical education and opportunities to develop their literacy and numeracy in other areas of the curriculum.
The following areas for improvement were identified:
- Ensure that children’s time during the school day is very well planned and leads to high-quality learning.
- Raise expectations of attainment in literacy and numeracy through learning that builds on what children already know.
- Develop children’s knowledge of literature through motivating them to read a wider range of texts for pleasure and enjoyment.
Overall, the school was graded ‘Satisfactory’ for both Learning, teaching and assessment; and Raising attainment and achievement.
Inspectors have expressed confidence that the school has the capacity to continue to improve and no further inspection visits are planned.
Tingwall Primary School nursery class was recently inspected by Care Inspectorate and so the nursery class was not part of this inspection.
Davie Sandison, Chair of the Council’s Education and Families Committee said: “I want to thank school staff for their hard work and commitment to the children at Tingwall Primary School and their families. I am sure the school can look forward to the future, under the guidance of the new Head Teacher, where the planned improvements can be made.”
