Is School Counselling suitable for my child?
We do not provide crisis counselling and should not be considered as an emergency intervention service. Children and young people who are having School Counselling sessions are ethically able to have scheduled breaks in counselling and those placed on the waiting list are considered safe to wait for counselling.
For a child or young person to access counselling they:
- must be between the ages of 10 and 18 years
- on a school roll
- experiencing mild, moderate or severe levels of emotional or psychological upset/distress/issues
- recognises that there is a difficulty or issue
- wants to do something about this difficulty or issue
- are willing to try counselling
- has the language skills to undertake a talking approach to therapy
- has the cognitive skills to reflect and engage in the dynamic process of counselling
There may be some instances where it may not be appropriate for them to be offered counselling, for example:
- They are not ready to engage in the process
- They are already engaged in counselling or therapy elsewhere
- They are already receiving treatment or intervention from higher tiered service such as Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
