Shetland's Population Balance
Data on Shetland’s population is analysed in the Shetland Partnership’s annual report, 2022-23. Commentary is also available in the 2022-23 Data Update which is published on the Partnership’s website. We regularly assess National Records of Scotland data on population and migration, which is used by managers and Members to inform longer-term strategic service planning.
While the initial census data shows a slight drop in population (1.2%) between 2011 and 2022, the latest figures on migration show a positive net figure, in line with national trends. At time of writing we await the publication of detailed datasets from Scotland’s Census 2022, which will provide granular information on population demographics, labour market, housing and geographic breakdowns.
Looking at specific actions within this theme, Our Ambition focuses on three tangible areas which are within our gift as a Council to affect. These are set out, with some updates on progress.
