Services in Shetland

Fire service

In 2023 there were 14 retained fire stations located in Shetland, staffed by a core of 9 whole-time staff based in Lerwick and 114 on call staff.

There were 225 fire service incidents in 2022/23, the majority of which were false alarms, either due to apparatus or good intent.

Police service

Shetland currently has 3 police stations, in Lerwick, Brae and Yell.  

In 2022/23 there were:

  • 1,172 crimes and offences recorded
  • A crime rate of 512 crimes per 10,000 population, which was lower than the Scottish average of 845/10,000 population

Water and waste water service

In 2022 there was:

  • 4,133,000,000 litres of mains water supplied, a daily demand of 11,320,000 litres
  • 1,071km of water mains, servicing 11,374 domestic and 1,268 non-domestic connections
  • 312km of sewers, servicing 8,204 domestic and 772 non-domestic connections
  • 12 water treatment works and 81 wastewater treatment plants
