Care homes and supported living

About our care homes and supported living

Care Homes in Shetland are operated by Shetland Islands Council, with the exception of Walter and Joan Gray in Scalloway (CrossReach).

How do I ask for help or to get a place in a care home?

If you already have a social worker, then you should contact them directly. Otherwise please contact our Social Work team who will ask you some questions, and carry out a With You For You assessment, to find out your needs and how best to meet these.

Moving into a care home is a big decision. You may not need to move into a care home as we may be able to support you to carry on living in your own home. For example, we can offer home care or special equipment.

Moving into a care home can be a significant life change. We will help individuals and their families with the process of moving into a care home so this move is done with confidence and ease.

A care home may be the best choice

  • if you can no longer cope in your own home
  • if you need 24 hour care.
You, or someone acting on your behalf, should contact our Social Work Team to arrange for us to assess your needs.

The Care Homes operated by the Council are:

Housing Support Services, including extra care housing and Mental Health Community Support

Non-residential short break and respite Care Home

  • Newcraigielea Care Home, Lerwick (for adults with learning disabilities and autism)

Sheltered/Supported Living Housing

We can also help you move into supported or sheltered housing. This is housing that gives you support and security without taking away your independence. The property is usually adapted for people with disabilities.

When you move into the housing, a support worker will assess your need for support.

More information is available on our Housing Support Page

Care Home and Community Care Services Inspections

All Council Community Care services are registered with and inspected by the Care Inspectorate, and their website explains how they regulate and inspect all care homes (Care Inspectorate - external link). Recent inspection reports can be found on the Care Inspectorate website by searching under the setting name: Find care (careinspectorate.com).
