Nordalea Care Centre, Unst
Nordalea offers a safe and homely environment where resident’s needs are met by a team of highly trained staff. Residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible and a person centred care approach is paramount.
About Nordalea and its location
Nordalea Care Centre opened in 2001 and is located in Baltasound Unst. It is located along the main road through Unst and overlooks green field and a view out towards the sea. Nordalea is located near two local shops including H. Henderson’s known locally as Ethel’s which can be an Aladdin’s cave of every item you would ever require, and Skibhoul Store which makes fresh bread and rolls daily. Nordalea offers service users lots of space and freedom and has level access through the entire building.
Visitors
Nordalea welcomes visitors at any time of the day and has no set hours. Families are always encouraged to come and support their loved one during meal times if this is something they want to do. There is a relaxed and homely atmosphere within Nordalea to support residents and their families with their stay here.

Facilities
There is a 24 hour in-house laundry service supported by staff (domestic and care shifts). Nordalea has a spacious main lounge with a large television, and a large sized dining-room. All bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms with residents having full access to a separate bathroom with adjustable bath. Many bedrooms has access to ceiling tracking hoists to support with the transferring of residents with reduced mobility.
Meal times and Nutrition
All meals are prepared and cooked in-house and all dietary requirements are catered for. Families are always encouraged to come and support their loved one during meal times if this is something they want to do.
Activities
Nordalea offers a range of activities. Some are ad-hoc such as singalongs, board games, quiz’s etc. and there are also some planned activities such as the church service and parties to mark special occasions. Residents are able to access day services activities twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesday. Nordalea has good relationships with many local groups including the local Primary school, Junior High School and early years departments and encourages the intergenerational aspect of this.
All residents are allocated a key-working team on their arrival at Nordalea and these staff members endeavour to build a close relationship with the resident and their families.
Nordalea is always included in things happening within the community from Unstfest Events to Jarl squad visits etc. Residents are supported to attend any public functions in the hall such as pantomimes, dances and Sunday teas.
Care Plans
Your care will be tailored to your support needs. Staff adhere to strict code of practices and national care standards.
Pets
Nordalea welcomes visitors with pets. Staff are fully aware of the benefits of pet therapy for residents' wellbeing.
Smoking
Smoking for residents and visitors is prohibited in all inside areas of the building, however there is a number of sheltered areas including within the central garden, and near to the poly crub, where service users and visitors can smoke.
Medication
In regards to any medications required, these are administered by trained staff members and documented on the individual’s Medical Administration Record (MAR) sheets. However independence is always promoted and if a resident has the capacity to support themselves to take medications this will be encouraged. Lockable cabinets are available in each bedroom. Senior staff make sure medications are ordered on a monthly basis from the local health centre.

Charges are based on a full financial assessment carried out by an approved officer. Charges for residence and day care are subject to annual review by Shetland Islands Council and are in line with national regulations set by the Scottish Government.
